The regular Dutch American Express Gold and Platinum cards earn Membership Rewards. Both offer travel benefits, but Platinum’s higher fee pays off only if you regularly use its extras.
Gold or Platinum?
Gold costs €20 a month and suits occasional lounge users. It includes four Priority Pass visits per membership year and Lounge On the go, a takeaway meal and drink at participating airports. It also earns Membership Rewards and has travel and purchase protection subject to policy terms.
Platinum costs €75 a month. It has broader lounge access, Privium for the primary cardholder, hotel privileges and Platinum Experiences, including Dining for 2. Lounge guest rules and insurance cover vary by benefit. If you seldom use eligible lounges, Schiphol, hotels or dining benefits, Gold is usually the more sensible card.
The price difference is €55 a month. Count only extras you would otherwise pay for. These are charge cards: you pay the outstanding balance in full each month. Foreign-currency transactions and cash advances can add fees. Carry another payment card for merchants that do not accept Amex, and confirm car rental deposit acceptance with the actual branch.
Points or Flying Blue status?
Gold and Platinum earn Membership Rewards, not Flying Blue XP. You can use points with several travel partners. A transfer to Flying Blue currently takes two Membership Rewards points for one Mile. If you want annual XP instead, consider the Flying Blue Amex cards. A welcome offer matters, but it does not automatically justify a higher fee in later years.
Our advice: choose Gold if its four lounge visits and other benefits fit your trips. Choose Platinum when you will use Privium, lounges, hotels and its other extras often enough to justify the difference. Product details checked on 28 September 2026.
Apply directly or via referral?
The application boxes below set out the direct and invitation offers for a new applicant. Our Amex invitation initially opens on The Platinum Card. Select “View all cards” to switch to The Gold Card. The selected card’s application page is where the final bonus and spending requirements appear before you submit personal details. The referrer may receive a reward. Since July 2026, transfers to Flying Blue use 2 Membership Rewards points for 1 Mile; a Membership Rewards bonus converts to half as many Flying Blue Miles at this rate.
Gold: the referral currently offers the better welcome bonus. Open “View all cards” from the Platinum invitation and select The Gold Card. Amex shows 40,000 Membership Rewards points there, while its direct Gold product page shows no welcome bonus. The referral pays 20,000 points in month 7 and another 20,000 in month 13, provided you make at least one €1 purchase in every month of the respective six-month period and meet the other terms.
