Schiphol’s Pier A moves towards its 2027 opening as rooftop solar installation is completed

Schiphol’s Pier A moves towards its 2027 opening as rooftop solar installation is completed

Schiphol’s new Pier A is moving closer to entering service. On 17 September, construction logistics partner Saan reported that hundreds of frames carrying solar panels had been installed on the roof. Official Schiphol imagery also offers a look inside the new passenger space. The expected opening remains April 2027.

Recent work on the roof

Saan handled logistics and lifting for the solar installation. The frames were assembled at a logistics hub, transported to the pier and lifted onto the roof by crane. Each completed frame weighs around 500 to 600 kilograms. Saan’s update also includes a video of the work.

Construction handover comes before passenger opening

The schedule Schiphol announced in July 2024 separates construction handover, planned for December 2026, from passenger operations in April 2027. System testing and preparations for airport staff and partners take place between those milestones.

Schiphol now says that the main construction is complete. The systems still need to be tested before the pier enters service.

More room for passengers

The official interior photograph shows large windows, greenery and varied seating. Schiphol also lists shops and dining among the design features. The pier covers 55,000 square metres and is designed to accommodate around seven million passengers a year.

Pier A is separate from the planned Terminal South development. For Pier A, April 2027 remains the expected start of operations; Schiphol’s current project page does not specify an exact opening day.
